Drinking too much water may kill you.

Drinking a lot of water is advised by most of the people and health experts but how much water? Is there any safe limit or you can just pour gallons and gallons of water in your stomach.
Drinking enough water is good for your body functioning and skin but it should not exceed your kidney's ability to pee out excess water.
Water that exceeds body's need is flushed out by kidneys from the blood but human kidneys can expel only half a liter of water in one hour.If you drink more than that, it will accumulate in your blood resulting in dilution of blood.Percentage of salts especially sodium will decrease in blood causing hyponatremia. Consequently water will enter the cells causing the cells to swell. Swelling may also occur in brain which in extreme conditions may cause coma and death.

Symptoms

Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are early signs. In extreme conditions coma and even death may occur.Sudden death is reported in such cases.

Treatment

Hypersaline solutions containing high percentage of salts are injected in the blood to treat the hyponatremia and to reduce the swelling of the cells.

Summary

In short you should listen to your body when drinking water. If your urine is pale, you need to drink water.Normally drinking 3 liter of water per day is enough unless you are involved in heavy exercises, running etc. In that case energy drinks containing salts are recommended.
